“I just couldn’t believe what I discovered”–remembers Gabor Somlyai for the moment in 1990 when he first discovered the connection between cell division and the amount of deuterium in water. But before we try to explain what deuterium means it’s worth to come to know the antecedents and the more than ten years.

This “flash” –intuition- has of course antecedents. A chemistry teacher in the elementary school in Csepel “from whom the whole class was afraid of, but he taught us the science”, a neighbour who had cancer and “suffered in front of me”, and Gabor Solmlyai’s father, who was a nature lover. From this we can call the whole thing an accident –but it’s better to say it was the part of the fate-: Somlyai couldn’t get into the Agricultural University but a year later he became the student of the University of Szeged. He studied biology there. 
“We need knowledge to have intuitions, because it’s not likely that this would come to a shoemaker’s mind”- tells about his years at the university. “But I tried at the university to get a lot of knowledge, but not with worthless things. If somebody is clever enough he can grab the worthy moments. Then he can work on it even through his whole life. With deuterium it seems this happened.”
Gabor Somlyai’s career was not straight to the discovery, but even when he worked as the fellow of the Hungarian Scientific Academy, or made cancer researches in Gottingen or in the USA, there was always the idea in his mind, that he must go back to deuterium. “If you let the fame to work, it will shows you the way”- this is the life philosophy of the 45 years old researcher-businessman who maybe found the cure for cancer, and he can become a billionaire. A real businessman won’t say such things, but Mr. Somlyai is not really interested in money. Or rather he is interested in it till he can go on with his experiments. He spent a lot of time and money to make his idea reality.
Now, in the spring of 2001, HYD Researcher-Developer Co. turn over 30.000 bottles of Prventa 105 deuterium depleted water and 4-5000 bottles of Vetera, which is the first anti-cancer drug for animals.
“Stable income, wider market and we have an investor for the fabrication”- tells the most important business fact Gabor Somlyai in a moderate office in Buda, while there is a line of people for the water. “The first patient, for who I could give from the water, was the father of my friend in 1992. He had a diagnosis that he has inoperable prostate cancer. After a cure of a month the doctors couldn’t find his tumor. The second was the mother of my brother’s friend, who had cancer in her tongue. After consuming Dd-water, the cancer disappeared.” And we could go on with this list.
Gabor Somlyai came back to Hungary in 1989 from Columbia University. He could stay for longer but his father got cancer. 
“It was a race against the time. I was ready with my theory, but the researches were ahead of us. I lost. Next year I became a scientific researcher of the National Institute of Oncology. And in this year I was able to prove my theory with experiments. I experimented with animal cells, and I found that the lower deuterium level blocks the cell division. This experiment was repeated in different laboratories all over the world with the same results. We discovered that if we lower the deuterium concentration in many steps, the effect is getting better and better. I took the first results with a grain of salt. We went on with the experiment for weeks and months and then we started with mice. We were researching the attitude of human transplanted tumors in the animals: the first group got deuterium depleted water, the second normal tap water. After 3 months there was in the second group just one mouse alive (from 11), but in the first group, which was watered with the Dd-water, there were 11 mice in which the tumor disappeared (from 17). After this we tried it in veterinary hospitals with dogs and cats. We got surpassing results. I can remember that there was a dog, which was taken to the vet to kill it because of it’s cancer. When he got his Dd-water he protected it from the others. He drank it till his tumor disappeared. Now he don’t need it any more.”
Gabor Somlyai is a patient, sober-minded person. There is just one thing in which he doesn’t know any compromises: in research. That’s why he left the National Institute of Oncology after a year and founded his own Co. with 1.500.000 Ft (\ 750.000) in 1993: HYD Co. from the name of hydrogen.
“There was an untenable situation”- told us- “and this was a jump to the dark. Mainly in economical sense, but I hadn’t got any other choice. Then there was the permission process and we had to start it in abroad too. Fortunately I found others too, who believed in me. We can say they believed to the facts, they believed to their eyes.”
Somlyai and his friend tried a lot of things to get the money for producing Dd-water- with a few successes.
“I’m not complaining. It was the trap 22. They told us to bring them proofs, but for that we needed money…”
First Somlyai produced his Dd-water in his garage. First just a few grams, then a few liters for research. The demand was always bigger than the supply, but they couldn’t find an investor for long years. 
The National Medical Institute gave the permission for hospital researches in 1995. The first experiments were successful, but this was not enough. The second phase of the experiments shut down a few weeks ago. This supported the results. HYD is waiting for the official answer.
It is part of the truth that the National Inventory Office was a partner for getting the permissions abroad. They gave the 70% of the 10 million Ft (5 million yen) as a loan. HYD can slowly begin the redemption.
Let’s Defeat Cancer!- this is the title of Gabor Somlyai’s book, which is in the second edition now. There is more than 200.000 tumotous people in Hungary nowadays. How long, nobody knows. But there are 36.000 people dieing yearly. A short quotation from the book: “When asked about the significance of the discovery, I always say that it is akin to trying to cure a fellow passenger’s headache in a crashing airplane. The issue of cancer is but the numerous problems, which is not worth much if we cannot solve the rest at the same time. Cancer, as a disease, is a signal conveying the message that we are seriously harming the planet Earth.”
I asked the author why did he write his book.
“To remain the knowledge, hold it up and to give it to everybody.” HYD produced in the last seven years 350 tons of Dd-water for the patients and made 13.000 pages of experiments. But we cannot express the feelings of the cured people with numbers. And about deuterium, I can make a quotation from the book again: “It is the simplest element, a variation of hydrogen, but also has a neutron, which has the equal mass of proton.”
